Abstract
This study investigates the impact of electronic banking services on real money demand in Libya over the period from January 2017 to January 2022. Monthly data from the Libyan banking sector were employed, including real money demand, the Electronic Services Index (ESI), real gross domestic product (RGDP), the inflation rate, and the real effective exchange rate (REER). To examine both the short-run and long-run dynamics among the variables, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) modelling approach was adopted. The empirical findings reveal the existence of a long-run cointegrating relationship among the study variables. The estimated long-run and short-run coefficients indicate that electronic banking services and real gross domestic product exert a positive and statistically significant influence on real money demand, whereas inflation and the real effective exchange rate have negative and statistically significant effects. Furthermore, the error correction term confirms an appropriate speed of adjustment toward the long-run equilibrium following short-run disturbances. The diagnostic and stability tests also demonstrate that the estimated model is statistically robust and satisfies the underlying econometric assumptions. Based on these findings, the study recommends expanding electronic banking services, strengthening digital financial infrastructure, promoting financial inclusion, and implementing policies aimed at maintaining price and exchange rate stability to enhance the effectiveness of monetary policy. The study's primary contribution lies in constructing a composite Electronic Services Index (ESI) and incorporating it into an ARDL framework to assess its effect on real money demand in Libya. This provides new empirical evidence that enriches the literature on digital transformation and monetary policy in developing economies..............
