Abstract
This research examines festivals and celebrations in the Maghreb during the Almohad period (515–668 AH / 1121–1269 CE) and their influence on social life in that region. The study proceeds from the premise that religious, official, and popular occasions were not merely transient rituals but functioned as active instruments for consolidating social cohesion and legitimizing a state that had risen upon the ruins of the Almoravid emirate. Employing the historical-analytical method in reading primary sources and modern scholarship, the study is organized into four chapters: the historical framework of the Almohad state and its social structure; religious and official festivals; family and popular celebrations; and finally, the social, economic, and political impact of this phenomenon. The findings indicate that the Almohads harnessed official ceremonies—oaths of allegiance and military victory celebrations in particular—to entrench the image of the Almohad caliph as an infallible imam in keeping with the Mahdist doctrine underlying the state's foundation, while Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the nights of Ramadan remained a popular space for renewing family bonds, kinship ties, and inter-class solidarity. The study also reveals that the celebration of the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid) had not yet become firmly established in the Almohad Maghreb in the form it later assumed under the Marinids, and that its earliest roots are tied to parallel developments in the Islamic East during the same era. The research recommends further comparative studies between Maghrebi and Mashriqi celebration in the medieval period, and subjecting narrative texts to an anthropological reading that uncovers their dimensions as social ritual........
