Abstract
Salinity is one of the most critical environmental factors and challenges facing the agricultural sector in many regions worldwide, negatively affecting seed germination and plant growth, including barley and wheat. Consequently, there is an urgent need to identify and determine salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive genotypes. This research focused on evaluating the response of two barley cultivars (Misrata 01 and Abu Jidari) and two wheat cultivars (MOD22-10 and MOD22-11) to different concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The experiment was conducted using a standard analysis based on a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replicates. Barley and wheat seeds were planted separately in Petri dishes containing filter paper and treated with varying salinity levels: 0, 50, and 150 Millimolar. The dishes were kept in the dark at a room temperature of 25°C for 10 days. During this period, the addition of the saline solution to all dishes was maintained according to the required concentrations, and germination data were collected. After 10 days of sowing, the experiment was concluded, and all data regarding germination percentage and early growth stages-specifically plumule length and seedling length-were compiled. The results revealed significant differences among the different cultivars. High salinity negatively affected all studied traits in the barley cultivar (Abu Jidari) and the soft wheat cultivar (MOD22-11). Conversely, the barley cultivar (Misrata 01) and the soft wheat cultivar (MOD22-10) demonstrated higher tolerance to high salinity during the seedling growth stage. This indicates their suitability for cultivation, and they are recommended for use in agricultural lands most affected by salinity. ............... Keywords:................
