Form Production Process in Digital Architecture:From Concept to Fabrication

Abstract
The accelerating advancement of digital technologies has profoundly transformed architectural practice, fundamentally redefining the concept of form, the most central element of architectural discourse. In the digital environment, architectural form has transcended its traditional status as a static visual outcome or geometric composition, evolving into a generative entity that emerges from the complex interaction of design intent, computational data, modelling software, and digital fabrication technologies. This paper investigates and analyses the form production process in digital architecture, tracing the sequential stages through which form progresses from initial conceptualization to physical realization. Special attention is given to the integration of computer-aided design (CAD/CAAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and to how parametric modelling and algorithmic generation, combined with digital fabrication techniques such as CNC machining and robotic fabrication, collectively reshape the ontology of architectural form. The study adopts an analytical–interpretive methodology grounded in a comprehensive literature review, theoretical deconstruction of key digital form concepts, and critical analysis of three landmark built projects: the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Frank O. Gehry), the BMW Pavilion in Frankfurt (Bernard Franken), and the Sendai Mediatheque (Toyo Ito). As such, the study is analytical and documentary in nature, based on literature review and the analysis of published case material rather than direct experimental investigation. The findings confirm that digital form is the product of a fully integrated generative system encompassing computational thinking, digital environments, and intelligent fabrication tools, characterized by continuous transformation, non-linearity, and structural-environmental responsiveness. The paper further demonstrates that digital fabrication tools have dissolved the historic divide between design and execution, repositioning the architect as designer-programmer-maker within a dynamic, data-driven design environment..................
