Abstract
This experimental study aimed to conduct a comparative qualitative phytochemical screening and estimate the extraction yield of 70% (v/v) ethanolic extracts of rosemary leaves (Salvia rosmarinus Spenn.) and pomegranate fruit peels (Punica granatum L.) collected from Al-Garabulli region, Libya. Extracts were prepared using cold maceration in three independent replicates. Qualitative screening for active compounds was performed, and the percentage extraction yield was determined and statistically compared between the two extracts. The results revealed that pomegranate peel extract achieved a statistically significantly higher extraction yield (18.70 ±1.04\%) compared to rosemary leaf extract (12.40 ± 0.70\%), with an absolute difference of 6.30 percentage points. In the visual qualitative screening, rosemary leaf extract demonstrated a strong visual response for flavonoids, a moderate response for tannins, and a weak response for saponins, while no positive response was detected for alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, or steroids. Conversely, pomegranate peel extract recorded a strong visual response for Wagner's test for alkaloids (a preliminary result requiring confirmation), the foam test for saponins, and the ferric chloride test for tannins, a weak response for flavonoids, and no detection for cardiac glycosides or steroids. The results indicate a clear difference in the qualitative phytochemical response pattern and extraction yield between rosemary leaf and pomegranate peel extracts under the applied experimental conditions, supporting the practical value of utilizing pomegranate peels as a promising agricultural waste, with the need for subsequent quantitative and chromatographic analyses..................
